Qualifications Framework

Draft Cooks Qualifications Framework (Nov 2008)

In order to draw new entrants to the field, and to promote continued professional development for those in the field the value of qualifications and optional learning routes must be described in a way that is cohesive, clear and realistic.

Clearly identified career paths and progressive qualifications can improve industry productivity because such a framework aids in the recruitment, selection and retention of skilled and qualified workers.

Qualifications frameworks can help:

  • Employers learn what various qualifications mean and how they relate to one another;
  • Individuals who are considering entering the cooking profession find out about the options and learn about the differences in programs and qualifications;
  • Learners who are considering moving to another jurisdiction, another qualification path, or another country (including immigrants to Canada), understand where their current qualifications fit in relation to their new goals and related learning paths.
  • Career counselors and teachers find accurate information to help advise learners, parents and employers about qualifications, their value and their ‘fit’;
  • Educators know approximately where related qualifications (from Canada or international) may fit with their institution’s qualifications

Over the past year, Chefs, industry, educators, apprenticeship and tourism human resource organizations and associations have worked together on the project, beginning a pan-Canadian discussion into how qualifications in the cooking profession link to one another. Qualifications Frameworks are about connecting existing Qualifications.

The work has not been completed, but a draft framework with clear career path options has been developed. The poster below is a product of the work to date. Details and links to jurisdictional and Qualifications specifics still need to be completed in future phases of work. Bookmark this site for updates and details as work progresses.
