Celebrating Tourism’s Best People
Tourism HR Canada is delighted to honour Debra Elless, Corporate Reservations Agent at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver, who recently accepted its Tourism Employee of the Year Award at the Tourism Industry Association of Canada’s Tourism Congress. The award, presented by Tourism HR Canada Board member Victoria Behune, recognizes a frontline professional whose leadership, dedication and high quality of service exemplify excellence in the tourism industry.
A 22-year employee of the iconic Vancouver hotel, Debra is a mentor to the reservations team, happily sharing her expertise and knowledge of the business travel and leisure markets and developing best practices to ensure the department operates efficiently. She chairs the committee that manages the hotel’s partnership with the United Way, leading to the hotel receiving the United Way’s Spirit Awards, Greatest Impact Award. Additionally, she is vice president for the local union that represents over 500 of the hotel’s employees, and is an essential part of their successful relationship. She volunteers on events and fundraising initiatives within the hotel and the community, putting in extra hours to ensure success. Clients regularly send notes of appreciation and thanks, commending her prompt and attentive service. She enthusiastically provides tailored, local insights to provide a memorable stay for the hotel’s guests, acting as an ambassador for the entire city—and country.
Professionals with this desire to consistently go above and beyond to ensure guest satisfaction are what make Canada’s tourism industry world renowned. Debra’s passion for the hospitality and her commitment to providing the highest standard of service are shining examples of the nearly 1.8 million individuals working in tourism and hospitality, daily offering incredible experiences to visitors from around the world.
