    CTHRC Hosts Session to Discuss Foreign Credential Recognition

    On November 28, 2008, the CTHRC hosted a lunch session with eight analysts, advisors, and researchers of Human Resources and Social Development Canada and Citizenship and Immigration Canada, who are involved with overseas strategies, newcomer integration, settlement, and foreign credential recognition. The presentation and discussion focused on recent tools and strategies developed by the CTHRC in collaboration with provincial Tourism Human Resource Organisations to facilitate effective labour market integration for non-regulated professions. This session was the first in a series to facilitate collaboration and cross-fertilization.

    2008 Tourism HR Forum Highlights

    Nearly 200 delegates from across Canada and from abroad gathered in Winnipeg last week to discuss challenges and find solutions to their human resources realities. Highlights of this year’s event included the keynote address by Dr. Nick Bontis titled Leadershift. This highly engaging presentation discussed the need to embrace new knowledge, and how by doing so, HR professionals can re-tool, re-learn, re-new and re-certify to meet the needs of employees and stay competitive. Dr. Bontis went on to state that “the number one most important thing that will drive success in tourism in the next five years: treat training as an investment, not a cost.”

    The CTHRC’s 2007-2008 Annual Report is now available online. The report contains summaries of the Council’s ongoing activities in areas such as labour market research, foreign credential recognition, training and certification, and temporary foreign workers.

    Ontario Educator Wins National CATT-CTC Award

    (Ottawa, ON) - The Canadian Academy of Travel & Tourism (CATT) and the Canadian Tourism Commission (CTC) are pleased to announce the sixth Canadian Academy of Travel & Tourism /Canadian Tourism Commission Best Practice Educator’s Award presented to Diane Kirkby, CATT Co-ordinator at Gananoque Secondary School, Gananoque, Ontario.

    CTHRC and STEC Visit Ready-to-Work Classes

    From November 18 to 20, 2008, CTHRC and STEC visited with three Ready-to-Work (RTW) classes in Lloydminster, Stony Rapids, and Stanley Mission, Saskatchewan. The visits were a great opportunity to speak with RTW coordinators in Saskatchewan, to see first-hand the various skills being developed by the RTW participants, and to appreciate the many opportunities that can come out of the Ready-to-Work program.

    Canadian Academy of Travel & Tourism Students Travel to Nice for 2008 International Student/Teacher Conference

    Canadian Academy of Travel & Tourism (CATT) students are on the move! Lauren Becwith and Meriel Bond of Manitoba will be travelling with their teacher to Nice, France to participate in the annual Global Travel and Tourism Partnership (GTTP) Student/Teacher Conference.

    CTHRC President Wendy Swedlove Recipient of Industry Award From Ted Rogers School of Management/Ryerson University

    (Toronto, ON – November 28, 2008) Canadian Tourism Human Resource Council (CTHRC) President Wendy Swedlove was recently honoured with the Ted Rogers School of Hospitality and Tourism Management (HTM) Industry Award at an award ceremony held at the Le Meredien King Edward Hotel. The award, presented by HTM Director Dr. David Martin, recognizes an individual who has continued to shine as a leader in the tourism industry and in their involvement with the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management at Ryerson University.

    International Event Management Standard Endorsed by Renowned University

    The Canadian Tourism Human Resource Council (CTHRC) announced today that Queen Margaret University of Scotland has become among the first higher education organizations in the world to officially accept and endorse the International Events Management Standard (IEMS). The university joins stakeholders from 16 countries in ratifying or currently validating the standard.
