In January 2012, the unemployment rate in the tourism sector was 7.9%, which was virtually unchanged from the rate reported in January 2011.
In the Canadian economy overall, the (seasonally adjusted) unemployment rate was 7.6%.
Within the tourism industry groups, employment in accommodations, and recreation & entertainment increased in comparison to January 2011, while no change was recorded in food and beverage services.
Travel services saw the largest year-over-year change in the unemployment rate (+4.6%).
On a Provincial basis, tourism unemployment rates ranged from 5.3% in Alberta and Saskatchewan to 27.7% in PEI.
