Labour Force Survey Highlights - October 2011
November 14 2011
In October 2011, the unemployment rate in the tourism sector was 5.8%. This was 1.0% lower than the rate reported in October 2010.
In the Canadian economy overall, losses in full-time jobs brought the (seasonally adjusted) unemployment rate up slightly to 7.3%. Despite this loss, full-time employment has increased by 226,000 jobs (+1.6%) since October 2010.
Compared to October 2010, unemployment in all five tourism industries has decreased. The recreation and entertainment and food and beverage services industries saw the smallest year-over-year change in the unemployment rate, while the largest difference was recorded in travel services.
On a Provincial basis, tourism unemployment rates remained lowest in Alberta (4.2%) and highest in Prince Edward Island (19.5%). In most jurisdictions, the unemployment rate in tourism industries was lower than in the overall economy.
