Labour Force Survey Highlights January 2011
February 15 2011
In January 2011, the unemployment rate in the tourism sector was 7.8%. This was similar to the rate seen in January 2010 (7.5%), however it does reflect an increase in unemployment within tourism industries, which contrasts with the trend seen in the total economy.
In Canada, employment rose for the second consecutive month, bringing the (seasonally adjusted) unemployment rate to 7.8%. Employment in the total economy has increased 1.9% compared to January 2010.
Within the tourism industry groups, the accommodations labour force saw the highest level of unemployment in January (12.0%) as employment in traveller accommodation and RV parks/ recreation camps both declined.
The unemployment rates within the transportation (2.7%), travel services (3.5%), and food and beverage services (7.8%) industry groups were similar to those posted a year ago (2.7%, 3.2% and 7.9% respectively).
Unemployment in the recreation & entertainment industry group reached 10.1% in January 2011, which represents an increase of 1.4% compared to January 2010.
On a regional basis, most provinces had tourism unemployment rates similar to the sector overall. However, due to employment declines in accommodations industries, higher tourism unemployment rates were seen in Newfoundland, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.
