CTHRC Releases Provincial Summaries from the Demographic Profile of Tourism Sector Employees Report

June 28 2010

The Canadian Tourism Human Resource Council is pleased to announce the release of provincial summaries from the report Who’s Working For You: A Demographic Profile of Tourism Sector Employees. The report uses customized census, labour force survey, and business register data to provide employment statistics for each of the industry groups included in the tourism sector: accommodation, food and beverage services, transportation, recreation and entertainment, and travel services. This edition of the report uses specialized tabulations from the 2006 Census to create demographic profiles of the Canadian labour force for the five tourism industry groups, and for 38 specific occupations. The provincial summaries break this data down for each province, and for their major metropolitan areas.

The provincial summaries from the Demographic Profile of Tourism Sector Employees report provide specific labour market information for each province in Canada. Highlights of the provincial summaries include:

  • In 2006, 15.9% of employees in Manitoba's accommodations industry were aboriginal, as were 18.5% of those employed in Saskatchewan's recreation and entertainment industry. In the entire Canada labour force 2.8% of workers were aboriginal.
  • Of the 364,225 tourism employees in Quebec, 13.1% were food and beverage servers. Of the 622,315 tourism employees in Ontario, 7.6% were food and beverage servers. This was the largest tourism occupation in both provinces.
  • The recreation and entertainment industry engaged 20.3% of all tourism employees in Nova Scotia, and 16.0% of those in New Brunswick.
  • Workers born outside of Canada made up 32.2% of the tourism workforce in British Columbia, compared to 2.7% of tourism employees in Newfoundland and Labrador.
  • In Alberta, 43.2% of employees worked on a full-time/full-year basis compared to 36.0% of those in Prince Edward Island.

Whether you are a researcher, educator or running a tourism business, a good understanding of the realities of the tourism labour force in your province is essential for policy-making, education and training, and informed human resource planning. The detailed information in the provincial summaries from the Demographic Profile of Tourism Sector Employees report will give employers hard data on the industry and the labour pool in their province, allowing them to adjust their recruiting and human resource practices to attract and retain the right people for their operation. Employees and job seekers can use the report to identify areas of opportunity in the tourism sector in their province, and to compare the labour force in their area to that of the tourism sector across Canada.
