Labour Force Survey Highlights October 2010

December 01 2010

In October 2010, the unemployment rate in the tourism sector was 6.8%. This was unchanged from the rate reported in October 2009.

In the Canadian economy overall, full-time gains continued to offset part-time losses. This trade-off resulted in a (seasonally adjusted) unemployment rate of 7.9%. Canada’s unemployment rate has been around 8% for the past seven months.

The unemployment rates within the tourism industry groups tracked inconsistently, as some showed year-over-year improvement, while others increased compared to October 2009.

The unemployment rate in the food & beverage services industry groups was unchanged from October 2009 (7.1%).

The accommodations industry group had an unemployment rate of 8.3%, however this was 2.8% less than the rate seen one year earlier.

The unemployment rate in the travel services industry (7.1%) recorded the largest year-over-year increase, followed by recreation and entertainment (+1.3% compared to October 2009).

At 3.0%, the unemployment rate within the transportation industry group was the lowest in the sector in October.

On a regional basis, half of the provinces had a tourism unemployment rate lower than or within a few decimal points of the sector nationally. The double-digit tourism unemployment rates seen in Atlantic Canada were primarily due to seasonal job losses in the accommodations and recreation and entertainment industries.
