July 21 2010

Employment in the tourism sector continues to track very well with most industries seeing year-over-year declines in the unemployment rate.

In June 2010, the unemployment rate in the tourism sector was 6.1%, which is 1.5% lower than the rate reported in June 2009. In the overall Canadian economy, the (seasonally adjusted) unemployment rate was 7.9% for the month. This is the first time the rate has fallen below 8% since January 2009.

On a year-over-year basis, the overall tourism labour force recorded increases in employment.

Within the tourism industry groups, the food and beverage services labour force saw the highest level of unemployment in June at 7.5%. Although high, this rate is 1.1% lower than it was one year earlier. In contrast, 1.8% of the transportation labour force was unemployed in June 2010. The recreation and entertainment group had 5.7% unemployment and the unemployment rate in accommodations was 6.8%.

Most provinces saw an unemployment rate that was less than or slightly above the rate in the sector overall.
