Labour Force Survey Highlights May 2010

In May 2010, the unemployment rate in the tourism sector was 7.8%. This was 0.6% lower than the rate reported in May 2009.
In the Canadian economy overall the (seasonally adjusted) unemployment rate remained at 8.1% for the month.
Within the tourism industry groups, the accommodations labour force saw the highest level of unemployment in May (9.3%) due to lower employment in RV parks and recreation camps. Nonetheless, the unemployment rate was 2.0% below the rate seen a year earlier.
In the food and beverage services industry group, the unemployment rate was 8.6%, a 1.1% decline compared to May 2009.
Employment in the travel services industry group also improved in May 2010 compared to 2009. The unemployment rate in travel services was 4.2%, which represents a 1.5% decrease.
On a year-over-year basis, both the transportation and the recreation and entertainment industry groups recorded slight increases in unemployment. In the recreation and entertainment group, 8.8% of the labour force was unemployed in May (+0.5%), while the unemployment rate in transportation was 3.2%, an increase of 0.6% compared to 2009.
On a regional basis, the unemployment rate in most provinces tracked similarly to the sector overall. The higher rates seen in Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island, and Nova Scotia are mainly due to reduced employment in other amusement and recreation industries and at heritage institutions.
