Labour Force Survey Highlights — July 2010

Tourism employment continues to track higher than in the economy overall, with four out of five industry groups seeing year-over-year declines in unemployment rates.

In July 2010, the unemployment rate in the tourism sector was 6.1%. This was 1.8% lower than the rate reported in July 2009.

While there were some declines in full-time employment in the Canadian economy overall, these were mostly offset by gains in part-time employment, and the unemployment rate settled at 8.0% for the month. Since the start of the upward trend in July 2009, employment has risen by 2.3%.

Within the tourism industry groups, the labour force within travel services saw the highest level of unemployment in July (10.3%).

On a year-over-year basis, the labour force within all of the other tourism industry groups recorded increases in employment.

In the transportation industries, the unemployment rate was 4.7%, compared to 7.5% in July 2009.

Almost five percent (4.9%) of the labour force within recreation and entertainment was unemployed, which represents a decrease of 0.6%.

The unemployment rate in accommodations was 5.7%, a decrease of 1.2% compared to the previous year.

In food and beverage services, 7.1% of the labour force was unemployed; however this was 2.5% less than the rate seen a year ago.

On a regional basis, the unemployment rate in almost all of the provinces was less than or similar to the rate in the sector overall. Even though a higher than average rate was reported for Newfoundland (10.2%), unemployment in tourism industries there tracked lower than in the provinces overall.
