    Labour Force Survey Highlights — July 2010

    Tourism employment continues to track higher than in the economy overall, with four out of five industry groups seeing year-over-year declines in unemployment rates. In July 2010, the unemployment rate in the tourism sector was 6.1%. This was 1.8% lower than the rate reported in July 2009.

    Five Businesses Achieve Employer of Choice Designations

    The Canadian Tourism Human Resource Council (CTHRC) and the Saskatchewan Tourism Education Council (STEC) are pleased to announce five new Employer of Choice recipients. With labour market research showing an imminent labour shortage, the CTHRC and STEC have each developed complimentary Employer of Choice programs to facilitate the attraction and retention of employees on the provincial and national levels.

    Canada Improves Ranking in International Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report

    Since 2005, the World Economic Forum (WEF), an independent international organization, has engaged industry leaders to analyze the competitiveness of the travel and tourism industries in countries around the globe. The WEF’s fourth annual Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report ranks Canada 5th out of 133 countries (up from 9th place in 2008). Of the countries that make up the Americas, Canada takes first place.

    The Tourism Industry Association of Canada (TIAC) is now accepting nominations for the 2010 National Awards for Tourism Excellence, presented by the Globe and Mail. Online nominations must be submitted by Friday, August 6, 2010. As a strong supporter of sustainable tourism through HR practices, the Canadian Tourism Human Resource Council (CTHRC) is sponsoring the Award for Excellence in Human Resources Development.

    CTHRC Releases Industry Group Summaries from the Demographic Profile of Tourism Sector Employees Report

    The Canadian Tourism Human Resource Council is pleased to announce the release of industry group summaries from the report Who’s Working For You: A Demographic Profile of Tourism Sector Employees. The report uses customized census, labour force survey, and business register data to provide employment statistics for each of the industry groups included in the tourism sector: accommodation, food and beverage services, transportation, recreation and entertainment, and travel services.

    Labour Force Survey Highlights May 2010

    In May 2010, the unemployment rate in the tourism sector was 7.8%. This was 0.6% lower than the rate reported in May 2009. In the Canadian economy overall the (seasonally adjusted) unemployment rate remained at 8.1% for the month.
