    CATT and Discover Tourism Highlighted at Canadian Association of Principals Conference

    On May 14th and 15th, 2009, CTHRC and MTEC exhibited at the 2009 Canadian Association of Principals Conference in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The organizations interacted with high school principals from across the country and made several other valuable contacts with fellow exhibitors at the event. Attendees were interested in the CATT program, and several elementary, middle, and high school principals were interested in Discover Tourism for career exploration classes.

    TIAC’s Roundtable on Sustainability Group to Use New Collaboration Tool Developed by the CTHRC

    The Tourism Industry Association of Canada (TIAC) Roundtable on Sustainability working group, whose mandate is to help guide sustainable tourism initiatives throughout the Canadian tourism sector, has chosen to use the Canadian Tourism Human Resource Council’s (CTHRC) web 2.0-based collaboration tool to help coordinate the group’s efforts.

    The Impact of Deteriorating Economic Conditions on the Tourism Labour Market

    Fostering its mandate to provide accurate, timely labour market information to the tourism sector, the CTHRC has been closely monitoring the impact of the economic crisis on the tourism labour force. The most current CTHRC research and industry statistics indicate there is now consistent evidence of a decline in employment growth rates in the tourism sector as a whole and actual declines in employment levels emerging in selected industries, including passenger transportation, accommodations, and food and beverage services. In recent years, many regions of the country have seen the tourism sector affected by a pervasive and growing labour shortage. Due to a diminishing labour pool, employers have previously been unable to fill positions created by retiring workers and a rising demand for tourism products.

    Preliminary Estimates on Tourism Payroll Employment Released

    On May 28, 2009, Statistics Canada released preliminary estimates of Payroll employment, earnings, and hours for March 2009. Consistent with the overall economy, declines in March in payroll employment were widespread throughout the tourism sector and related industry groups, including traveller accommodation and full-service restaurants (-0.8%), transportation and warehousing (-0.4%), the arts, entertainment, and recreation industries (-0.7%), information and cultural industries (-0.8%), as well as the retail trade sector (-0.5%). Notably, over the full first quarter period of 2009, payroll employment in the traveller accommodation and full-service restaurants industry group has fallen by 1.3% since December 2008.

    CTHRC Connects With Teachers at Ontario Cooperative Education Association Conference

    On April 27 and 28, CTHRC and OTEC exhibited at the Ontario Cooperative Education Association spring conference. The conference was very well attended and there was a great deal of traffic in the exhibitor area. Representatives were able to interact with teachers and provide them with information on the CATT program, Discover Tourism, emerit products, and OTEC initiatives.

    The Alliance of Sector Councils Launches Revamped Website

    CTHRC is among the 37 sector councils featured on the recently redesigned The Alliance of Sector Councils (TASC) website. This new site features information on sector councils and the priorities and issues they address. Visitors will find resources on key issues in skills development and can sign up for a news feed (RSS) to keep up to date on the latest sector council announcements.     2010 CATT Student Conference Planning Underway

    On April 24, CTHRC and STEC attended a meeting at Nutana Collegiate High School in Saskatoon. The participants discussed the 2010 CATT Student Conference, including the proposed agenda, the proposed budget (locally sponsored), and a timeline and milestones for conference documents. This meeting demonstrated the strong commitment of the school and the local industry to hosting the CATT student conference, and allowed the CTHRC to provide input and ensure the agenda is retaining a strong tourism career component throughout the program.

    Now Available: Human Resource Module of the Tourism Satellite Account, Update to 2007

    A new tourism training and planning resource, The Human Resource Module of the Tourism Satellite Account, Update to 2007, is now available. The Human Resource Module (HRM) provides detailed information on total employment in the tourism sector, which gives stakeholders a broader insight into tourism's role in the economy and a deeper understanding of tourism employment trends. In partnership with the Canadian Tourism Human Resource Council (CTHRC) and the Canadian Tourism Commission (CTC), as well as Human Resources and Social Development Canada (HRSDC), Statistics Canada is leading the world in the production of a Human Resource Module for the Tourism Satellite Account.

    CTHRC Excites Interest at Rendez-vous Canada 2009

    From May 9 to 13, 2009, CTHRC attended Rendez-vous Canada in Calgary. The Council showcased its products and services through a Tourism Mall display and held meetings with delegates. Rendez-vous Canada brings together over 1000 delegates, including selected international buyers and travel trade media, with invited suppliers of Canadian tourism products, services, and information. Interest in the Council’s offerings was very high: over thirty meetings took place, identifying opportunities to work together with attendees.

    Canadian Academy of Travel & Tourism Works with Online Programming

    The Canadian Academy of Travel & Tourism (CATT) program is looking toward the future as it works with virtual programs from several provinces. Integrating technology with the learning environment is essential as students of the digital age move through the public education system. Programs that offer a virtual experience allow students who may not have a tourism or hospitality program at their local high school to participate in the Academy program. CATT currently works with virtual schools in British Columbia, Alberta, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia.
