The Canadian Tourism Human Resource Council (CTHRC) has released a fresh update of its free employee-rated Employer of Choice program. The online program has a new look and feel, new functions, and a user-friendly sign-up wizard to guide participants through the process. It has been specially tailored by human resource experts to reflect the needs of all sizes of businesses, giving owners the flexibility to assess multiple business locations or individual departments.

On June 9, 2009, CTHRC and OTEC presented the Canadian Workplace Essentials (CWE) Training Program at the Higher Level Employment Related Language Programs Conference in Toronto. The event was hosted by the Learning Enrichment Foundation and funded by Citizenship and Immigration Canada. The CWE program contains nine modules covering skills and attitudes that tourism employers have identified as important when hiring foreign workers. In attendance were more than 100 individuals involved in the delivery and coordination of language training and bridging programs. The objectives of the workshop were to increase awareness of the program and discuss preliminary results from pilot deliveries in Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and the Yukon Territory. Throughout the workshop, attendees expressed appreciation for the quality of the training program and its applicability to a variety of settings.

Olympic Champion Nancy Greene Raine is the Canadian Tourism Human Resource Council’s (CTHRC) new spokesperson, supporting the Council in promoting tourism careers and first-rate HR practices.
The CTHRC is honoured to be associated with an athlete and entrepreneur of Nancy Greene Raine’s stature. Ms. Greene Raine was named Canada's female athlete of the 20th century and appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada for her triumphant ski career and her continued contributions to the sport. She won gold and silver medals at the 1968 Grenoble Olympics and overall World Cup titles in 1967 and 1968. She holds a Canadian record total 13 World Cup victories and won 17 Canadian Championship titles.

On May 29, 2009, CTHRC delivered Discover Tourism presentations to two classes at Gloucester High School in Ottawa, ON. The presentations were well received by approximately 50 students, who learned about the five industries of the tourism sector, the variety and flexibility tourism provides, and the tools available on the Discover Tourism website. Discover Tourism promotes the diverse job and career opportunities available in the tourism sector to youth and non-traditional labour markets.

Statistics Canada has just released its Labour Force Survey data for May 2009. The results show the tourism sector unemployment rate reached 8.4%, paralleling the trend seen in the total labour force. However, compared to May 2008, tourism unemployment increased at a slower pace than total Canadian unemployment. While there has been some increase in tourism unemployment over the past few months, the sector’s peak season has barely begun; therefore, the full implications of the current economic challenges on tourism employment are not yet known.

On May 27, 2009, CTHRC met with the Canadian Foundation for the Americas (FOCAL). The objective of the meeting was to identify a joint research agenda on the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology to produce geographic representations of migrant flows and labour market information for the tourism sector. This is under the framework of FOCAL's Mapping Knowledge for Development in the Americas Project. As a follow-up to the meeting, the CTHRC will be sharing some of its data with FOCAL to further explore the possibility of developing a pilot map for the sector.

On May 26, 2009, CTHRC met with key representatives from the Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatistica and Statistics Canada to discuss developing regional tourism statistics for the Tourism Satellite Accounts in Brazil and Canada. The main purpose of the meeting was to explore potential interest and areas for technical cooperation between the two national statistical agencies.

The Canadian Tourism Human Resource Council (CTHRC) and the Conseil québécois des ressources humaines en tourisme (CQRHT) are pleased to announce the launch of a new program in Quebec that allows individuals working in certain tourism-related occupations the opportunity to obtain both the nationally-recognized emerit Professional Certificate issued by CQRHT and the provincially-sanctioned Certificate of Qualification – similar to a Certificate of Apprenticeship in other jurisdictions – issued by Emploi-Québec.

On May 14th and 15th, 2009, CTHRC and MTEC exhibited at the 2009 Canadian Association of Principals Conference in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The organizations interacted with high school principals from across the country and made several other valuable contacts with fellow exhibitors at the event. Attendees were interested in the CATT program, and several elementary, middle, and high school principals were interested in Discover Tourism for career exploration classes.
