June 2009 Labour Force Survey Data Released

In June 2009, the unemployment rate in the tourism sector was 7.6%, which remains below the national average of 8.6%. Within the tourism industry groups, food and beverage services had the highest level of unemployment in June 2009 (8.6%), mainly due to a high unemployment rate in “drinking places”.

Overall employment in Canada remains well below last year's peak; however, the pace of job losses has shifted in the past quarter. Total net losses were 13,000 for the last three months, compared to a decline of 273,000 in the first three months of 2009. However, Canadian employment for youths aged 15 to 24 fell by 33,000 jobs in June, pushing their unemployment rate to its highest level in 11 years.
