July 2009 Labour Force Survey Highlights
August 10 2009
Since October 2008, overall employment in Canada has declined by 414,000 jobs. However, the country’s unemployment rate remained at 8.6% in July 2009. The unemployment rate in the tourism sector was below the national average, at 7.9%.
The vast majority of employment losses to date have been seen in manufacturing, construction, and transportation and warehousing. Employment in accommodation and food services fell by 48,700 jobs in July 2009 compared to July 2008. However, less than half (23,500) of this decline reflects losses in industries that are part of the tourism sector.
Compared with July 2008, overall employment for students aged 15 to 24 was down 10.9% in July 2009. This was the fastest year-over-year rate of decline for the month of July since 1982. In contrast, workers aged 55 and over had employment increases of 90,000 between October 2008 and July 2009.
