Topical content, engaging sessions, and a beautiful setting are becoming hallmarks of this annual event.

The Canadian Tourism Human Resource Council (CTHRC) held its most successful Tourism HR Forum April 30 – May 1.  The event theme, “Can tourism deliver? Responding to the HR Crisis,” was well received by delegates looking for solutions to their specific human resources challenges.  The 250 delegates heard from an exceptional line-up of keynote and panel speakers on subjects including: working with various generational pools; mining the strengths of cultural diversity; becoming an employer of choice; and a number of other timely subjects.

“Our industry is coming of age and is looking for practices to ensure that guests visiting Canada receive first-rate service.  The HR Forum is a great venue for operators to share the best practices that will raise the overall level of professionalism in the sector, thereby ensuring Canada’s competitiveness globally,” says Dean Sockett, Director of HR for Keg Restaurants Ltd. 

Labour shortage issues and solutions have played an important part in the content over the past number of Forums, but not until last year’s event in Halifax did the topic become the predominant theme.  The move of the event to western Canada this year seemed to raise the labour shortage issue a few notches higher, given the current climate in the region.  “The change in priority and focus of our industry over the past twenty years has been staggering,” noted Ian Powell, General Manager of Laurel Point Inn, Victoria British Columbia. “In the 1980s we put all of our efforts into marketing.  In the 1990s, we began to realize that human resources practices had to improve if we wanted to remain successful.  Yet, even with this realization, very few operators introduced real improvements to their HR practices, and we therefore find ourselves in a situation where industry is finally acting and making HR a top priority because they have to,” added Mr. Powell.
